Parent teacher conference
And then people wonder why the educational system is in a disarray. This is what we have to deal with as teachers. Maybe not all at the same time, but I think I've heard most of these excuses from some of my parents in the 9 years I've been doing this.

When you care enough to spell the very best...
So the students who pass the spelling pretest on Monday get the challenge assignment for the week, which just involves using the words more as vocabulary than for spelling. For this particular assignment, the students had to choose amongst eight activities. This student chose to make up greeting cards, using the spelling words.
I'm not particularly fond of the effort this student put into the assignment, but I thought the following two cards were clever.
The spelling word was "deserve." The front of the card said, "You deserve better." This is the inside of the card:

It tells me a lot about what's going on with this kid OUTSIDE of school.

I thought I'd get something having to do with record keeping for crops, or trade... something to do with a major contribution to the world's first civilization: Mesopotamia.
